The National Administration of Meteorology (ANM) issued on Monday a series of Code Orange and Code Yellow warnings of heavy snow, blizzard and strong wind in more than half of the country, including mountain areas, valid until Wednesday morning.
According to the specialist forecast, from December 23, 20:00 to December 25, 10:00, a Code Orange for heavy snowfall, snow accumulation and strong blizzard at altitudes above 1,700 meters in the Southern Carpathians and locally in the Eastern Carpathians will be in force.
"In the Southern Carpathians and locally in the Eastern Carpathians, at altitudes above 1,700 meters, it will snow heavily and locally, a consistent new layer of snow will accumulate. The accumulated amounts of water will be 30 - 50 liters/mp. The wind will blow hard, with gusts of more than 90 - 110 km/h, there will be strong blizzard and snowdrifts, that will lead to visibility dropping below 50 meters," warn meteorologists.
In the same time frame, a Code Yellow will be in force for heavy snowfall, snow accumulation and blizzard at altitudes between 800 and 1,700 meters in most of the mountain area. It will snow, and a locally consistent new layer of snow will accumulate. The amounts of accumulated water will be 20 - 25 liters/mp. The wind will intensify, with gusts above 60 - 80 km/h, there will be blizzard and snowdrifts, conditions in which visibility will drop below 100 meters.
According to ANM, it will temporarily snow in Timis county and the lowlands of Caras-Severin county, with wind gusts of 40 - 50 km/h.
A second Code Yellow for strong wind will come into force on Tuesday morning, affecting areas in Muntenia, Dobrogea, southern Moldavia, eastern and southern Transylvania.
Thus, during the period December 24, 05:00 - December 25, 10:00, in the mentioned areas, there will be wind gusts reaching speeds of 50 - 70 km/h, and during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday (December 24/25), in isolated areas, above 80 km/h in eastern Muntenia.
Meteorologists warn that the wind will temporarily intensify in the rest of the country, with speeds of 40 - 50 km/h, which will persist on Christmas Day, December 25 and 26, especially in the southeast of the country. AGERPRES
