Europe needs America, and Romania needs privileged bilateral relations with the U.S., "not directives imposed by those who have already proven that they do not understand the global context," leader of the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) George Simion said on Tuesday.
"Romania can no longer stand on the sidelines. We cannot allow our economic interests to be sacrificed on the altar of bankrupt policies promoted by leaders who have lost all connection with their peoples or with reality. Instead of ending up with Romanian products blocked in American ports, with tariffs that destroy exports and with alliances put at risk, let's say this clearly: Romania must have its own voice in the EU. A voice that defends the Strategic Partnership with the U.S., that does not dynamite it," Simion wrote on his personal website.
In his opinion, the trade tariffs imposed by the U.S. are a "clear" and "predictable" response to the EU's "risky" decisions.
"This trade conflict did not start out of the blue. The tariffs imposed by the US are a clear and predictable response to the risky decisions of the European Union. This is the direct reaction to the fiscal initiative promoted by the OECD, enthusiastically adopted by the bureaucrats in Brussels and Paris, and especially to the repeated attempts of France and other states to impose digital taxes on American giants that operate online - companies such as PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, Google or Meta," the AUR leader argued.
