President-elect Nicusor Dan on Thursday said that Romania's assistance to Ukraine will continue, that he hopes peace is achieved as soon as possible, adding that Romania is very open to participating in reconstruction efforts.
Nicusor Dan made these remarks during the 9th edition of the 'Black Sea and Balkans Security Forum.'
He was asked about how he views the development of Romania's partnership with Ukraine, potential peace negotiations, and Ukraine's post-war reconstruction.
'Although I have been somewhat of an opponent of the governments over the past three years since the war began, I have welcomed the way Romania has positioned itself toward the war in Ukraine during each of those years. It was the correct approach, considering the international political context, where we saw an aggressor state break the stability established 80 years ago by international treaties. And of course, [Romania] acted with its own security in mind and the security of the Republic of Moldova, because Ukraine is a friendly state, and we prefer to have a friendly neighbour next to both Romania and Moldova. Support for Ukraine will continue, of course, we all hope that peace can be achieved as quickly as possible, or at the very least a ceasefire. Until then, Europe, and Romania as part of Europe, must give Ukraine all the tools it needs to negotiate a peace that is as favorable as possible. And once that happens, we are certainly very open to participating in the effort to rebuild,' said Nicusor Dan. AGERPRES
