The "Dr. Constantin Opris" County Emergency Hospital (SJU) in Baia Mare was equipped with medical equipment for the intervention and saving of the lives of newborns requiring intensive care, the Save the Children Romania Organization stated on Tuesday in a press release sent to AGEREPRES.
According to the cited source, the total value of the investment is 80,000 euros.
"The medical equipment donated to the "Dr. Constantin Opris" County Emergency Hospital will provide considerable support to doctors who save the lives of children born with various medical pathologies and with a severe degree of prematurity: laminar flow hood, 4 bilirubinometers, 2 audiometers, 4 treatment carts, 3 pulse oximeters, 6 stethoscopes and 5 cribs for newborns. The equipment was made possible with the support of Hidroelectrica," the organization stated.
According to the same source, of the 2,208 children born at the hospital's maternity ward in 2024, 143 required intensive care and 181 were born prematurely. 75 newborns had congenital malformations.
In 2025, 662 births were registered and 75 newborns required complex medical care in intensive care. In the first months of the year, 40 minor mothers gave birth here.
According to available data, in Maramures county, including Baia Mare municipality, there was an increase in premature births, from 601 in 2022 to 758 in 2023.
In Maramures County, the "Dr. Constantin Opris" County Emergency Hospital in Baia Mare has a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with a capacity of 10 beds, equipped with modern equipment necessary for the care of premature infants with low gestational ages and newborns who require support of vital functions.
The hospital also has a compartment dedicated to premature babies, with a capacity of 10 beds, intended for newborns with a gestational age of less than 37 weeks and a weight of less than 2,500 g, who do not require resuscitation or support of vital functions.
"The endowment is part of the complex program of Save the Children Romania to reduce infant mortality in Romania, a chapter that keeps us on the EU podium. In the last 15 years, Save the Children Romania has carried out pioneering work and equipped 135 medical units, neonatology, neonatal intensive care, pediatrics and obstetrics-gynecology departments, from all counties of the country, investing over 17 million euros. Over 2,000 pieces of equipment have supported and facilitated the treatment of over 300,000 children," the Save the Children Romania Organization also stated in the press release.
