Senate president Ilie Bolojan on Wednesday stated that the request to suspend president Klaus Iohannis from office is just a move made for image and is ''irrational."
"During this period, what you see are actually pre-campaign political actions that have only an exclusively political purpose and have no connection with reality. Take into account, first, that the signatures for the suspension request were submitted only to the Deputies Chamber, although the regulation is very clear that these suspension requests must be submitted to both chambers. Either it is a matter of ignorance or it is effectively a matter of image. You draw the conclusions. (...) The suspension request is an exclusive move intended to boost image, thought up by those who submitted it, and it is irrational, in the sense that, even if the entire procedure was to be carried out, the presidential election that should be organized would be held after May 4. Therefore, from this point of view, once you have a clearly established calendar, just beating the drum without any effect can only lead you to conclude that these are exclusively political actions and have no connection with the interest of our country, but only with a conjunctural political calculation," Bolojan told a press conference held at the Senate.
He was asked if president Klaus Iohannis should come out to explain why the presidential election was canceled.
"This is now in fashion and it sounds good to constantly criticize the president considering the low trust rating. As I said before, I believe that the more all those institutions that have the competence to explain these aspects explain these things, the more they come up with additional data, the more the level of misinformation, suspicions and unnecessary discussions will no longer have consistency and will be reduced to a reasonable level," said the Senate President.
The Young People's Party (POT) announced last week that 161 POT, AUR (Alliance for the Union of Romanians) and SOS parliamentarians signed for the suspension of president Klaus Iohannis, and the signatures were submitted to the speaker of the Chamber of Deputies. AGERPRES
