The Romanian swimmer David Popovici was nominated by the continental swimming forum for the title of the best European swimmer of 2024, informs Agerpres.
This year, David Popovici won a gold medal at the Olympic Games (200 m freestyle) and a bronze medal (100 m freestyle), but also two gold medals at the European Championships (100 m freestyle, 200 m freestyle).
Irish Daniel Wiffen, Hungarian Kristof Milak, French Leon Marchand and Italian Thomas Ceccon are also candidates for this title.
The most decorated is Leon Marchand, who won four gold medals and one bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Paris, set four Olympic and two European records.
Wiffen's record this year includes a gold and a bronze medal at the 2024 Olympics, two gold medals at the World Championships, an Olympic record and a European record in the 800m freestyle.
Kristof Milak won one gold and one silver medal at the Olympic Games, as well as two gold medals at the European Games.
Thomas Ceccon won a gold and a bronze medal at the Paris Games.
In high diving, two Romanians were nominated for the title of the best European sportsman of the year, Constantin Popovici and Catalin Preda.
Preda won bronze at the World Championships, while Popovici placed 8th at the Worlds, but won gold at the World Cup.
