Romania's coal production exceeded 1.758 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) in the first 11 months of last year, a decrease of 15.8% (minus 329,700 toe) compared to the same period in 2023, according to data centralised by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
Coal imports during the mentioned period amounted to 174,800 toe, down by 11,700 toe (minus 6.3%) compared to January-November 2023.
The dynamics of coal production and imports are expected to decline from 2024 to 2027, as other energy production capacities come up, with a decrease of 11.4% and 24.5%, respectively, according to the latest Energy Balance Forecast published by the National Commission for Strategy and Prognosis (CNSP).
Thus, according to the CNSP, coal production is estimated at 1.92 million tons of oil equivalent for 2024, down by 17.3% compared to the previous year, 1.718 million toe in 2025 (minus 10.5%), 1.555 million toe in 2026 (minus 9.5%), and 1.432 million toe in 2027 (minus 7.9%).
Imports are estimated to decline in 2024 by 15.4% compared to 2023, reaching 206,000 toe, in 2025 by 20.5% to 164,000 toe, in 2026 by 26.3% to 121,000 toe, and in 2027 by 34.4% to 79,000 toe. AGERPRES
